What – or whom – do you believe?

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) who declared this in January:

“What he [President Obama] misunderstands is that nine out of 10 businesses fail, so nine out of 10 times, he’s going to give it to the wrong people. He gave $500 million to one of the richest men in the country to build solar panels, and we lost that money.”

Bloomberg, who, in 2013 reported this alarming statistic that was picked up by the likes of Forbes.com:

“According to Bloomberg, 8 out of 10 entrepreneurs who start businesses fail within the first 18 months. A whopping 80% crash and burn.”

The Small Business Administration who reports this:

“About half of all new establishments survive five years or more and about one-third survive 10 years or more. As one would expect, the probability of survival increases with a firm’s age. Survival rates have changed little over time.”

Statistic Brain, that compiled this chart showing a 50-50 split in startups after four years.

Whoever you’re inclined to believe, or whatever you do believe, know this – At Active Screening, we want you to succeed. Doing so, though, requires quite a bit of planning, budgeting, creating, promoting… there are countless ‘ing’s’ you’ll need to take care of.

Worrying about your cash flow should be one of them. Money matters are one of the top reasons businesses fail. Here’s a few of the most common and detrimental mistakes (courtesy of Statistic Brain):

  • Emotional Pricing/No knowledge of pricing

  • Poor credit granting practices
  • Lack of financial responsibility (taxes, borrowing)
  • Fraud

This last one is especially heartbreaking to us because fraud is preventable. Active Screening understands how important your dollars are. As a small business ourselves, we know how hard you’ve worked to get your business off the ground and the time, energy and money it’s taken to keep it up and running. The fact that a slimy employee can strip that away from you without your knowledge is sickening.
